I made the decision when opening my private practice to not be an in network provider for any private insurance carriers, Medicaid, or CHP+.
I am unable to provide out of network services for Medicaid or CHP+.
Out of Network Benefits
Often times, families wish to off set the cost of mental health care by submitting for out of network reimbursement. To help clients start that process I have a quick tip sheet that includes questions to ask your insurance provider before submitting a claim.
If you plan to submit for out of network reimbursement, it is helpful to notify your therapist at the onset of services. Your therapist will then provide you with a monthly super bill and CMS 1500 form.
To make the process of submitting forms/information easier I recommend that clients use Reimbursify. Reimbursify can also assist in troubleshooting any claim denials.
Insurance providers can/do request documentation to determine if the services provided meet medical necessity criteria as established by insurance carrier.
No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimate
Good Faith Estimate
You have the right to a “Good Faith Estimate” (GFE) explaining the cost of the mental health services to be provided to you. Under the No Surprises Act (passed in December 2021), all health care providers including mental health providers, are required to provide clients who do not have insurance or are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for services to be provided.
New clients will receive a Good Faith Estimate Notification and agreement form as part of the intake paperwork to review and sign. I am open and transparent with my fees ($165/50 minute sessions, $250/90 minute intake) so that clients are able to know up front the financial investment they are making by pursuing and engaging in ongoing treatment. Clients should expect to start with an investment of an initial intake ($250) and 12-16 weekly sessions (allowing for some fluctuation due to client or therapist schedule). Frequency of sessions may decrease depending on treatment phase, goals, and client progress.
A GFE will provided in writing upon completion of their initial assessment. GFE will include diagnosis (as required by the No Surprises Act), services to be provided, frequency of services, and total cost of services. GFE is provided annually or whenever there is an update to the services agreed upon, change in fee for services, or significant change in frequency. You can request a GFE before you schedule services (however I will not provide a diagnosis until completion of initial assessment which can take 2-3 sessions as I do not find it ethical to make a diagnosis based on limited information and before I have met the identified client), and it does not serve as consent/or agreement to services.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For ongoing clients, each GFE provided will be part of your medical record.
